About ASA

Arrow Spring Academy was founded in 2014 by parents, Zara and Anton E. Hairston. They could no longer afford private school so they tried the next best thing, a blue ribbon school. Only to learn their oldest had been lost in the building her second day. Led by the Holy Spirit through prayer, they made the decision to homeschool.

Our Students

Summer 2014, Arrow Spring Academy got its start with two eager students. The Hairston’s youngest daughter Evyr, was a kindergartener. Harlem, their oldest daughter, was a first grader. Fall 2018, the Hairston’s plan to add their son Kinsington to their kindergarten class.

The Teachers

Zara Hairston, Arrow Spring Academy’s co-founder, designs and continues to build the homeschool curriculum as the students excel each school year. Additionally, she teaches most of the curriculum subjects while her husband and co-founder, Anton, assists with electives which include music and creative arts.

Extracurricular Participation and Student Engagement

Recent research suggests that participation in extracurricular activities may increase students’ sense of engagement or attachment to their school, and thereby decrease the likelihood of school failure and dropping out (Lamborn et al, 1992; Finn, 1993). If, indeed, participation in extracurricular activities can lead to success in school, then the availability of these activities to students of all backgrounds becomes an important equity issue.

What You Need to Know About Standardized Testing

Since No Child Left Behind in 2001, standardized testing has become increasingly excessive in our school system. The high stakes and high costs have parents and educators wondering if we’re focused too much on testing and not enough on teaching. In 2011, a cheating scandal was exposed involving 178 Atlanta Public Schools’ teachers and principals. While admittedly one of the largest, it was not the first nor the last in response to the increasing pressure placed on schools by standardized tests. So…to test, or not to test? That is the question.
